Taliban are revoking Afghan women’s hard-won rights

Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Because the Taliban swept back to Afghanistan in August, they have established their fundamentalist interpretation to Islam. Apart from trying to change again more moderately, the group has imposed many restrictions that revoked the freedom won by Afghan women through the history of struggle and activism, and revealed the benefits made over the past two decades.

Following the AL-Qaeda attack on September 11, 2001, in New York and Washington, DC, the United States invaded Afghanistan. Justification for the war puts up attention to the Misogyny Taliban. According to Administration, US President George W. Bush, the war on terror in Afghanistan “also struggled for women’s rights and dignity.”

It draws attention to the fate of Afghan women, which translates to international assistance and funding for social programs and NGOs that focus on improving women’s lives. This allows women in urban areas, especially in the capital, Kabul, to participate in public life in a way that is not possible under the Taliban regime.

But the change failed to reach the countryside, where, according to data from the World Bank, around 70% of Afghanistan lived. In the war two decades, villages throughout Afghanistan have become countless clashes between groups that are aligned Taliban and national and national forces. Rural women constantly suffer a night attack, air strikes and displacement, without getting the opportunity to benefit from the opportunities expanded to their colleagues in cities.

A UN report published in July quoted rural women who said the 2020 withdrawal agreement between the United States and the Taliban meant lack of violence in their area, greater freedom of movement and reduced anxiety.

The first restrictions introduced by the Taliban once they regain power mostly target middle class women. But they develop into a long list of rules, which will affect all Afghan women’s populations.
