Taliban seeks greater role in distribution of Afghan foreign aid
The Taliban government which controls Afghan control has proposed a body with its officials and international representatives to coordinate billions of dollars in planned assistance.
It is not clear whether the United Nations and foreign governments will support the agreement because it is a surprising increase in access to international funds by the Taliban, whose officials have been ruled out due to sanctions.
Withdrawal of foreign aid who suddenly last year after the hasty exit and Taliban victory in August left a fragile Afghan economy on the verge of destruction, with food prices increased rapidly, causing hunger to spread widely, causing widespread hunger.
Western sanctions intended for the Taliban also prevented the passage of food supply and medicine, even though since then subsided after the exception was passed by the UN Security Council and the US in December.
On Tuesday, the United Nations asked for a donor for $ 4.4 billion in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan in 2022 and the White House announced it would donate an additional $ 308 million.
“The purpose of this committee is coordination at a higher level to facilitate humanitarian aids from the international community and to distribute assistance for people in need,” Deputy Prime Minister of Acting Afghanistan Abdul Salam Hanafi said at a press conference on Wednesday in Kabul Also attended by the United Nations, also attended by UN Messenger Ramiz Alakbarov.
“We ask the international community that they must use the government’s capacity for their assistance purposes.”
Foreign governments, face warnings that millions can starve because the economic crisis increases, increasing humanitarian assistance but wants to remain free from government disorders.
A spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Finance said the discussion would last 24 hours ahead with the United Nations in the proposal for the body together.
The UN Deputy Secretary Secretary for Afghanistan Alakbarov told the Reuters news agency that UN agencies have communicated their requirements to the Taliban for assistance.
