UK to Announce Dozens of New North Sea Oil and Gas Licences -Sources
The British government is expected to announce dozens of new North Sea Oil and Gas Exploration licenses in an effort to increase domestic production, two sources who are familiar with government discussions said.
The exact number of new licenses must still be confirmed, one of the sources, which spoke on anonymity condition, said. Others said that it could be as many as 130. The announcement could come immediately after Thursday.
Prime Minister Liz Truss, appointed on Tuesday, will leave for parliament on Thursday his government’s plan to handle the soaring energy bill. During the leadership campaign, he repeatedly said that increasing the supply of domestic energy would be part of his focus in trying to reduce prices.
The Truss office did not directly comment on the license but noted that the Prime Minister had told parliament that the government would increase supply through northern marine resources and more nuclear power plants.
The license round will not offer short -term assistance for energy bills because it usually takes between five to 10 years from initial exploration to oil and gas produced from the field.British’s last offshore license round was in 2020.
