UK, US warn citizens about Abuja after Kuje prison attack
The United States and British governments on Wednesday issued separate security advice on their citizens in Nigeria after the Kuje prison attack.The US government told its citizens to expect an increase in crime in and around Abuja.
It is recommended that US citizens must maintain high personal security awareness for the next two weeks and avoid unnecessary trips on the airport road,” said advisor on his website.He added that the crime was endemic throughout Nigeria and tended to surge after dark.
The US advised Americans to avoid locations and situations that increase the likelihood of becoming victims.Avoid the appearance of valuable items and limit night activities.Likewise, the British government asks its citizens to “become more alert if in the area.”
The Kuje guard center located in the Federal Nigerian capital area was attacked on Tuesday night to free the imprisoned criminals. The attack occurred despite a previous warning by the State Intelligence Service.
A prison source told the Premium Times that the State Security Service had “Previously today warned the upcoming attack on Kuje Prison.Sources, however, cannot describe the level of steps taken to prevent attacks.
Although there is speculation about who the possibility of an attacker that might occur, the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) on Wednesday claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a video shared by a terrorist group on Wednesday, many inmates were seen escaped from prison while terrorists shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’.
Iswap is a faction that separates from the Boko Haram sect which has terrorized the northeastern region of Nigeria for more than a decade.
The Boko Haram rebellion has caused the deaths of more than 100,000 people in North Nigeria while millions of others have been displaced.
