US Embassy In Moscow Hides Address As Russia Renames The Square Outside Building After Ukraine Separatists

The United States Embassy in Russia uses coordinates instead of addresses on its website as the authorities in Moscow to change the name of the square outside the building after the pro-Kremlin separatist in Ukraine.

Last month, officials in Moscow announced that the US Embassy in Russia is now located in 1 Donetsk People’s Republic’s Square, referring to the area that separated in East Ukraine which was recognized by Moscow as an independent even before sending troops there.

In response, the US embassy registered its location as “55.75566 ° N, 37.58028 ° E” on its website. However, the “Embassy and Consulate” section of the website still includes the previous embassy address: Bolshoy Deviatinsky Pereulok No. 8.

In particular, in June, Moscow residents chose to change the names of the square outside the US embassy. In the same month, Moscow City Hall announced the new name of the open area in front of the main entrance of the embassy.

In a statement, the authorities said that the change was made after the Moscow Council member proposed to respect the “Defender of Donbas” – a majority Russian region in Ukraine that Russia said it was freeing as part of the “Military Campaign”. They also told me that the new address was chosen in public voting where nearly 280,000 people participated.

This happened after the protesters in the United States put up a sign outside the Russian Embassy in Washington DC, unofficially changed the name of the road after the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Newsweek, activist Claude Taylor said, “President Zelensky Way’s road sign is only our way to protest the cruelty of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin peacefully and respect Ukraine.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent troops to Ukraine on February 24, increasing tensions that have been high between Moscow and Washington.
